For about a week the inside of my cheek has been hurting…it stings when i eat acidic foods. I took a look and there is a large area that is a darker shade of red than the rest of my mouth. there are a few pale colored areas that look like canker sores but im not sure if thats what they are. the pain has subsided but the area is still red and looks inflamed (about the size of a nickel) what could this be?
Im a healthy guy and dont smoke or drink a lot.
PLease help.. Thanks
Answer: One poss. is Lichen Planus, but see a dermatologist to make sure. The mouth is one site where outbreaks with redness & pustules from this can show up, although less commonly than on the outer skin. There it shows up as scaling, pustules, & polygonal red/violet lesions. Treated most often with oral corticosteroids, but sometimes oral tetracyclene (antibiotic) or cyclosporene (imunodepressant).
A Dermatologist may have other ideas, and he/she would prob. look to other more common sources of inflamation/irritation first (maybe even allergic reactions). A small biopsy would be needed to confirm Lichen Planus, which unfortunately has no known cause.
