Ubuntu is not stable, nor is it user-Friendly, Sucks
I installed Ubuntu on a freshly built computer, and it worked great for a couple of months (besides not supporting my late-model canon all-in-one, my webcam or my old DVD-rom). But, who cares. At least I was screwing corporate feudalism. And besides, Ubuntu is user-friendly, almost never gets viruses/never gets viruses, is extremely secure and stable, and never crashes. Except, that is all BS.
My Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 sound always crashed on YouTube and had to be restarted to watch videos. Then, the screen started popping up that gave me a crap-load of Ubuntu versions to load (generic, recovery mode). Which, one by one couldn’t get past the Ubuntu loading screen without being unable to find the needed files to boot and got hung up on a 317 input/output error followed by a continuously scrolling splash screen of error 317’s.
No problem, it was probably my fault for trying to download cool seeming programs like QCAD and some decent RTS game. It’s not like Ubuntu is presented to people as “user-friendly” or anything. Anyway, now I’m totally screwed because all of the Ubuntu uninstall tutorials assume I have Windows to get at Linux. And I can’t uninstall this shit to reinstall it. All the while having someone looking at me saying “I told you so, Hippy”. Good times. I’m especially happy I also lost a bunch of files.

And the fustration builds… yep, you sound like me the first time i used linux. i finally caved and bought a book called “the official ubuntu book” by burger, bacon. linux is new and different and when you’ve used windoze all of your life, change is hard. buy the book and give yourself a couple weeks to digest the info. also, i would suggest using an old p.c. (everyones got three in their basement) to practice on till your sure of yourself. rock on, down with the corporate dogs! (that is until i become a corporate dog, all filthy rich and happy. then its power to the corporate elite who built america)
How Much Time Is Left? I’ve been using Ubuntu since 8.10, or about nine months. Then, how many months do I have left before things start going wrong?? I dread that day, because it literally has been like heaven for me with this OS. It’s like I just did some re-modeling on my house, and now I wonder just whose house am I in now. Now, I have Ubuntu on some computers, and I wonder, whose computers are these. But I am actually expecting that everything will just continue going well. I’ll see.
OK, everybody has to learn their own way, and nobody knows everything, but just because you had a bad experience doesn’t mean everyone else is stupid.
All BS? Did you get a virus? I’ll bet not. Not user friendly? Well, that depends on the user and what you’re comparing to. No, Linux is not generally known to be user-friendly, just like sports cars are not user friendly. You need to learn a little.
Not secure? Did you have a break in? I’ll bet not. Not stable? Did anyone that did not have root (or sudo) privileges do anything to cause it to fail? I’ll bet not. If you used root authority without knowing what you were doing, then you need some basic training.
And since it’s a “freshly built computer”, there’s actually no guarantee that it ever worked reliably. Maybe the sound is flakey, and that’s why it crashes on YouTube. I never had problems like that with any versions of Ubuntu, from further back than 8.04.
But you didn’t really ask any questions, so you’re probably not interested in actually learning how to fix it.
