Cancer, No Health Insurance, where to turn? Please help
Do you have information for people who are going through cancer without health insurance. I’m currently getting treatment for cancer (which is expensive) and potentially losing my medical benefits. What options are out there for people like me, 30 years old? Because of pre existing condition I certainly can’t call any providers and expect insurance. Where do I turn, does the state have options? Any help would be great. Thanks
Answer
Why are you losing your health benefits? If you have insurance now (group) and are losing your benefits, you can get Cobra. If you are having expensive treatments at a hospital, sometimes THEY will pay the Cobra for you (this happened to my brother). Good luck to you.
Answer
In all likelihood the need for cancer treatment will outlive the continuation of coverage under COBRA — and continuation under COBRA is contingent upon the ex-employer continuing that insurance plan. If the employer doesn’t continue it for remaining employees, then COBRA won’t, continue, either.
Let’s find out what the OP’s situation is. Coverage under COBRA might be the best deal for awhile, if it’s available.
Answer
Find yourself an independent insurance broker, one who represents all the plans. The particular product you’re looking for is an indemnity plan versus a standard insurance policy. Otherwise known as “guaranteed issue.” Although it’s not standard major med, it still qualifies as credible coverage under HIPAA.
There are different plans for different circumstances. Some are heavy in the prescription coverage realm, which can be a godsend to cancer patients.
Guaranteed issue products are fairly new, and by last year only a handful of brokers carried them. Now it’s far easier to find a broker who does.
If you don’t know of anybody, contact your local chamber of commerce to get a referral to an independent insurance broker, and ask that person if they specialize in placing high-risk applicants. If they don’t, they can likely get to a referral to a broker who does.
Good luck!
