I have a Low Tension Glaucoma.

BACK STORY:
I saw a dr. a year ago for possible diagnosis of Low Tension Glaucoma, my optometrist was suspicious for 8-years. He just now shared that after all that time, and he also wasn’t dilating my eyes. When I saw the ophthalmologist, he said he didn’t believe I had it, that it might just be genetics, that I was just born with one cup being a bit different then the other, and that the optometrist hadn’t been dilating my eyes; my eye scan showed I had a cup size of 5 I believe, he said it’s not that high, I passed the visual field test as well and he said I shouldn’t worry, he said you can live many, many years and never go blind, if treated early, he said he didn’t want to treat me now, as the medicine is very expensive, of course I am very worried.

A friend of mine has worked as an ophthalmic tech for 20-yrs.; she thinks anyone who has glaucoma will go blind and that all doctors are trained to tell you only the positive, she said she would just go and plan her own death, nice friend, I mentioned this to the dr. and he said I shouldn’t be listening to my friends.

QUESTION:
So, does anyone have this type of Glaucoma? Do you agree with my friend or dr.? How expensive is the medicine? If anyone has lived a long happy life with this, I’d love to meet you. Thank you, I live in San Mateo County.

Answer
Your friend is crazy! I have glaucoma, my Mom has it too. We don’t have the type you have, I don’t know anything about yours. My Mom didn’t catch hers early and when she did, she didn’t use the drops, even though she had the drops! She did lose her sight! She was almost 70 when hers was caught. When hers was caught (late because she didn’t go to doctors) she had already lost most of the sight in one of her eyes so hers had gone on for years and years.

When she was diagnosed, I immediately went to an ophthalmologist and mine was caught early. That was 14 years ago, I still haven’t started drops and my sight has only barely changed even though I’ve now developed cataracts. I go in a minimum of every 3-6 months to be checked.

I don’t know what the drops cost but one lady I was talking to said they were cheap. My Mom’s doctor gave her her drops free, that she didn’t use and I’ve seen people walking out of my doctor’s with theirs free. I’m pretty sure one time when I was looking at Walmart’s $4 prescription list I saw some of the drops on there. NO, having glaucoma does not mean you will for sure go blind!

Listen to your doctor when he says don’t listen to your friend!
