About ten days ago my long time good friend and neighbor came down with what she thought at first was a cold. Sadly she was wrong. Within 5 days her fever had risen to 101, her nose was red as well as swollen to at least twice its normal size, and there was swelling under her right eye accompanied by what she described as the headache from hell. It was at this time that she was forced to realize that her condition was much more serious than a cold and that she needed to seek medical attention ASAP.
Well she did see a doctor that day and the diagnosis was a severe staph infection! The physician prescribed doxycycline and mupirocin(an antibiotic ointment). He also took a culture as he was concerned that the staph could be the strain which has become resistant to a number of drugs over the years (MRSA) and if the culture determined this to be the case then the clinic would give her a call. Within 24 hours her symptoms began to improve and there has been more improvement each day after.
On Tuesday the clinic called with her test results and unfortunately the news wasn’t good; it is indeed MRSA. Early next week she has a follow-up appointment at the clinic as the doctor wants to make certain that the antibiotics have indeed eradicated the infection. Believe me we both are wishing that the clinic hadn’t called as what we’re seeing on the internet about MRSA most certainly is not good. It seems that the chance of a recurrence is rather high and some patients have been left with chronic fatigue syndrome, in some cases so severe that the affected individuals had no choice but to quit working and go on disability.
Now my friend and I are really concerned about her furure quality of life. Has anyone else here had any experience with MRSA or know someone who has? Any helpful insight at this time would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
You should be concerned.it took me almost 1 year to clear up my mrsa. But I have hep c as well and my primary not thinking put me on Cipro for 6 months ruining the rest of my damaged liver. Septra in the 800mg range is used for mrsa, doxycycline takes forever. Now I have scars from the infection traveling up my left leg, permanent scars (how attractive can that be?)
We all carry mrsa bacteria inside our noses, wash your hands several times a day, keep them clean, hope your friend gets better.
Answer
Like the previous mentioned washing your hands is the best defense espically if you are doing anything with your nose eyes or mouth or dealing with any types of cuts to the body. Main thing is to keep your friends germs to them and off you and if you get it on its not going to kill you for the minute a may be in contact just wash your hands before giving the MRSA/VRE/CDIFF/Neurtopenia infections a port of entry into the body.
Answer
Most people with relatively health immune systems can basically hold of MRSA attacks until the individual comes down with a cold or something that puts strain on their immune system. This also is dependent on where in the body the infection is based and where all it may have spread to.
