Symptoms: red rash, cracked skin in groin area. Lots of sweat or some other clear liquid coming from problem area.

I’ve been living a tropical country for years now but have never really gotten used to the heat, so I spend most time indoors with AC.

Over the years I have had itchy rashes in my groin area on the upper inner thigh. I itch it sometimes and it eventually goes away. Over the last 6 months they have been worse and a couple times I scratched enough that it started to bleed a little bit. After which, I’d make sure not to scratch.

Last weekend I went to a party where I stayed outdoors all day. I haven’t done that in this climate for years. I went to the store on my friends bike and carried a case of beer back in my lap. I say this because I noticed the problem has come up before when I wore tight clothes and the case of beer was putting pressure on the problem area for at least ten minutes.

Well, now I have the worst rash like this that I’ve ever had. The skin in my groin where the inner thigh meets the testicles is cracked and red. It’s spread out in each direction: a bit on the back of one testicle and more on the upper inner thigh. My skin is red, itchy and painful. I stayed in all day and wasn’t active and it started feeling better. Went outside in the heat and had trouble walking because of the pain. Going to the doctor soon but I live in a country where they love to give antibiotics for everything from a cold to a headache. Just would like an idea of what this is. What sort of treatment is usual for this? Stay in cool place, lower my activity? Wash the area every day or bandage it and let it heal? I just want to get an idea about what it might be and what to do about it.

Answer
Are you diabetic? Sounds like a yeast infection which are more common in diabetics, but can happen to anyone. If you have a suppressed immune system due to AIDS or another condition, that also puts you at higher risk.
