24 years old female diagnosed with spinal meningitis, please help..
My 24 year old daughter was diagnosed by her doctor with spinal menningitis this afternoon. She was admitted to the hospital. What can anybody tell me as to what to expect? I am scared for her. Please help!
Answer
What kind? Spinal meningitis can be either bacterial of viral. For bacterial meningitis antibiotics
will be used. For the viral kind antibiotics are not effective so the symptoms are treated.
Such as seizures and brain selling. Hopefully your daughter was diagnosed early.
The bacterial meningitis is the more severe of the two. You will probably want
more specific info concerning your daughter so DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK YOUR
DOCTOR QUESTIONS. If she is in the hospital the nursing staff are a good source
for information and support. Good luck.
Answer
Most meningitis’ are viral in nature- and people are freq sent home with it. It requires no more monitoring or caution than the common flu. Bacterial is a bit more serious…will require the antibiotics and isolation.and the hospital will prob already know by the time she gets to her room which it is- viral or bactrial- it’s figured out in the er by spinal tap.
It can be a concerning situation.though, with it being cught anywhere close to early, it’s few days to a week in the hospital, then rest at home for another week.
good luck and let us know how it goes….
